To qualify for admission to a Specialized High School, a student needs an outstanding score on the SHSAT (Specialized High School Admissions Test). In an ever-growing city that puts an incredible premium on quality education, admission to these schools has never been more competitive. More than 26,000 students take the SHSAT each year to qualify for fewer than 6,000 spots.

The SHSAT is offered only once per year, in October or November, and students are eligible to take the test in eighth and ninth grade. In effect, this means that students have only two chances, once in eighth and once in ninth grade, to qualify for a Specialized High School.
