We take great care to match each of our students with the right tutor from our roster, basing the choice on the student’s individual profile and specific needs, in order to ensure a successful relationship.
At CATES, our hallmark is our customized approach to learning. We understand the vast demands placed on students today, and know that every situation is unique—everyone learns differently and responds to different teaching methods. Achieving success in a tutoring or test prep program is far more complicated than simply matching a Manhattan LSAT prep student with a Manhattan SAT tutor; a Brooklym math student with a Brooklyn math tutor; a Westchester SAT prep student with a Westchester SAT tutor, and then picking up the corresponding test prep book at the bookstore. It’s not that simple because students aren’t that simple—in tutoring and test prep, as in most things, one size does not fit all.
Whether you're in New York City, in Scarsdale, Rye or Harrison in Westchester County, or in Woodmere, Hewlett or Cedarhurst in Long Island, we take great care to match each of our students with the right tutor from our roster, basing the choice on the student’s individual profile and specific needs, in order to ensure a successful relationship. Once we’ve selected a tutor we think would be a good match for a particular student, the student and his or her family get a free consultation with that tutor, to see if they agree that it’s the right fit. If they do, that tutor then creates a customized study plan, and identifies the materials and resources that best address the student’s needs and learning style. If they don’t, they can try another of our tutors, or talk to us about other options
Our tutors’ credentials are certainly impressive: degrees from top-level schools, excellent test scores, and years of experience in the field. However, equally crucial to our success is their dedication, talent, creativity, and warmth, and their ability to be flexible and creative when it comes to helping students set and meet goals. A great mathematician isn’t necessarily a good math tutor—it’s not enough to be an excellent test-taker; great tutors also need to be able to build a relationship with the student, and work with the student’s personality and learning style, rather than expecting the student to adapt to a pre-made tutoring program. From middle school tutoring to LSAT prep, in both private tutoring and group test prep courses, mutual trust and respect is essential to the tutor-student relationship, and with CATES students get more than a tutoring service; they get a mentor, coach, and friend.
At CATES, our goal is to re-orient our clients’ attitudes towards the test prep, tutoring, and application prep processes, and help them see these challenges not as painful necessities, but as rites of passage. Whether a student comes to us for SAT prep, LSAT prep, help with their college essay, or a math tutor, working with CATES to achieve their goals gives students an opportunity to develop new skills, new learning habits, and a confidence in their own abilities which will carry them far beyond any class, test, or application, and into the next phase of their lives.
