Q: What tests and subjects do your tutors teach?
A: CATES tutors teach an incredibly broad array of tests and subject areas (including, but not limited to, the SAT, ACT, SAT II subject tests, ISEE/SSAT, SHSAT, GRE, MCAT, LSAT, physics, biology, high level math, etc.). If you have a test you need to take or a subject you need to brush up on, we can tutor it. Give us a call at (212-359-4208), and we'll figure it out together.

Q: How does CATES match their students with the right tutors?
A: We understand that every student is unique, therefore every CATES match is delicately considered. The attention we give to each match is central to our student success rate. At CATES, we have in-depth conversations with our clients prior to any tutor match. We ask questions about learning styles, personal hobbies, academic goals and interests. These important details are crucial for a good match, and the more we know about our clients, the better our matches!

Q: Do CATES tutors teach all sections of the SAT and/or ACT?
A: Yes! Each of our SAT and ACT tutors cover all sections of the test, which allows for consistent tutoring across the entire exam.

Q: Do CATES tutors teach SAT II subject tests?
A: Yes! The SAT II subject tests are broad and varied, and so are the skills of our tutors. If you're taking a subject test, we have the tutor for you.

Q: What is a "diagnostic test," and how will it help me?
A: The diagnostic test is a mock test that CATES uses to help determine where you are in your testing process. Once we see your diagnostic, and understand how you are answering questions, we can build a framework for our targeted, custom tutoring.

Q: How many mock tests can I take?
A: CATES clients can take as many mock tests as they would like, and they are always FREE. Non-clients have a limited number of mock tests they can take. A non-client will receive a free diagnostic report for their first mock test, and just scores for the second mock test.

Q: Can I take a mock test home?
A: Mock tests provide the most crucial information in determining a student's progress and understanding of the material. Part of taking a mock test is the testing environment. CATES recommends students take their mock tests at one of our proctored testing centers. After a mock test, students are encouraged to take the test home to go over their progress with their tutor.

Q: How many points will my score increase when working with a CATES tutor?
A: Since each student starts at a different place and has different goals, it is difficult to generalize score increase. For example, going from 400 to 600, or going from 720 to 800 are both impressive score increases despite their numerical differences. Each student is a unique learner, and as part of the CATES process, we help the student maximize his or her potential.

Q: Will my tutor travel to my home?
A: Yes! Our tutors travel regularly to their student's homes. There are exceptions, however, which are location-dependent. We also offer Skype tutoring when location is an issue, or to maximize available tutoring time.

Q: Can I meet my tutor at the office? (Location specific - NYC, Westchester, Philadelphia, London)
A: Yes! The CATES offices provide a great learning environment for many students who prefer to study outside the home. We recently opened a new location for our test prep tutors in Short Hills NJ, serving Millburn, Summit, Livingston, Chatham and other NJ towns.

Q: How do I pay my bill?
A: Invoices are sent out at the beginning of the month for the previous month's sessions. You have 15 days to pay your invoice before it is considered past due. Invoices may be paid by credit card, wire transfer or Intuit payment link. We also have the option for monthly auto-pay.

Q: Can I cancel my session?
A: A client may cancel their session up to 2 HOURS PRIOR to the session. If a client cancels any later, the session will be billed.

Q: If I am in a CATES class and I miss a session, can I make up the class?
A: Yes! We offer a discounted private rate for one-on-one tutoring to our clients who must miss a class.

Q: What if I want to switch tutors?
A: If a client requests a new tutor - whether for specific subject tests, relocation, or any number of reasons that come up through the process - call Client Services at (212-359-4208), or write to info@catestutoring.com, and the process of creating a new match can begin.

Q: What is the Essay Workshop?
A: Every year CATES hosts a 3-day essay workshop intensive, which helps students knock their Common Application out of the park!
