Applying to college is a stressful time for everyone. That period of summer to winter of Junior year is a writhing mass of personal essays, standardized testing and maintaining grades and extracurricular activities. It can be so easy to get caught up in the “stressing culture”, but there are actually ways to avoid the proverbial ‘struggle bus.’ Some people argue that they need stress to keep them focused and motivated in the application process… No! There is never a need for stress. Stress is the result of life overload. Too many things happening at once that manifests itself in a feeling of exhaustion and weariness. Despite our understanding of the evils that stress brings we do, more often than not, let it into our lives and dictate the hours of sleep we get each night. (more…)

Do Colleges Look at Facebook?

Almost all high school juniors find themselves asking this question, and wondering just how thorough an investigation are those college admissions officers going to do.

Surely they’re too busy to Google you, to look you up on Facebook, or to find your Twitter account, right? They’re busy people! The last thing they have time to do is look through your photos from homecoming, when things got a little messy, or notice that your last couple statuses were ragey rants about your math teacher…right? Can’t we just throw those rumors in the conspiracy theories pile, and forget about it? (more…)

’Tis the season for submitting those college applications, and in the whirlwind of school, sports, and squeezing in final ACT, SAT, and SAT Subject Tests, the college application process starts to feel like a high-speed race. You’re getting all of your ducks in a row—nailing those final test scores, getting recommendation letters, putting together your resume, throwing your activities onto the Common App, writing, editing, and re-writing your college essay and supplemental essays—and you cannot wait to hit that “SUBMIT” button on the Common App, so you can finally breathe a sigh of relief (and sleep at night). It’s one of the only two essays on the Common App proper, but it doesn’t get much attention. The extracurricular essay—that 1000 character short essay on the Common App that asks you to briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences” just doesn’t get a lot of love.

The College Essay” refers to the Personal Statement—the approximately 500-word main essay that the Common App requires applicants to upload, and each college and university has their own supplement, complete with supplemental essays that run the gamut from “Why Tufts?” (Tufts, 2012) to “So where is Waldo, really?” (U Chicago, 2012). The extracurricular essay often gets overlooked (some students and parents aren’t even aware that it’s there until they look at the Common App for the first time). To see this little essay as a throwaway, however, is a big mistake, and a missed opportunity. (more…)
